+overall parallels between these proofs and the place of scientific reason in the world compared with religion

+people on the outside believing smerdyakov to be an imbecile while in reality he teases and manipulates ivan, seen to be the most clever of alll the brothers. he even pierces ivan from beyond the grave with his suicide note stating that he does it
